Firstly, can you tell us a bit about yourself and what you do at Paton & Co?
I’m a Rural Surveyor at Paton & Co. having qualified earlier this year. I joined the team in late 2025 having previously worked at Exmoor National Park Authority down in Devon and Somerset. I’ve therefore got a varied background along with the fact that surveying is my second career. I previously worked in Public Relations.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I love how varied it is. My interests run in so many different directions, so being a rural surveyor is perfect as every client has different asks and needs. One day I’m doing a valuation or a property inspection, the next I’m walking up a hill to check on a peatland restoration project.
What’s your favourite place to escape to or explore when not working?
My favourite place to escape to has to be my family’s bolthole in Perthshire. It’s so peaceful, there’s no Wi-Fi, and you really feel like you’re away from it all. Also, any excuse to go skiing and I’m there.
Can you tell us some of your favourite local businesses?
I’m obsessed with The Bakehouse Market in Findhorn. I can’t go past without buying something delicious. I also love the weekly auctions at the Elgin Auction Centre. It’s become a Tuesday ritual for a few of us in the office to go and see what we can find.
What are you enjoying reading, watching, or listening to at the moment?
My trusty podcast has to be RedHanded, a true crime gem, and then I am just about to start reading Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke. I’ve been meaning to start this for a while.
If you were to describe your dream home what would it look like?
Stone with lots of glass and a good view, and not too far from the local pub.
What are you most looking forward to work wise as we move towards the end of the year?
Sorting out my desk… I tend to work in organised chaos.
