In this month’s In Conversation With, we chat with our Office Co-ordinator Alice Ellwood.
Alice joined the Paton & Co team last year, and has lived in the Scottish Borders all her life. Here, she shares her favourite places to escape to with her partner Connor and their golden cocker spaniel Coisty, as well as some of her favourite local businesses, current reads, and things she’s looking forward to in the coming year.
Firstly, can you tell us a bit about yourself and what you do?
I work mainly in admin and office coordination, but I’m involved in the process from start to finish. I’m usually the first point of contact when you call the office — so I’ll be the one on the other end of the phone making sure you’re directed to exactly who or what you need.
Otherwise, I help keep everything running as it should: organising viewings and market appraisals, keeping completion days on track, and making sure everyone knows what’s happening and where they should be (including me!).
I’ve recently qualified in lettings, which I’m really proud of. We haven’t launched that side of the business just yet, but I’m excited for when we do. It feels like I’m building solid foundations for a long-term career in property — something I’ve wanted for a long time — so it’s really lovely to see it all starting to take shape.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I love being part of the full journey of a sale. There’s something really satisfying about seeing a property go from initial valuation right through to completion, knowing you’ve played a part in keeping everything on track. I also really enjoy speaking to so many different people throughout the day — no two conversations are ever the same. Being part of our clients’ journey, from that first enquiry to the final stages, is something I genuinely value. It’s lovely to feel involved and know you’ve helped make the process that little bit smoother.
I also genuinely enjoy the organisational side of things. I’m definitely someone who thrives on structure — give me a to-do list, an Excel spreadsheet and a back office system, and I’ll be all over it. There’s a quiet satisfaction in being one of the people who keeps things ticking along in the background.

What’s your favourite place to escape to or explore?
I live in Chirnside, so I’m surrounded by countryside, which I absolutely love. It’s perfect for switching off after a busy week — fresh air and long walks with Connor and our gorgeous golden cocker spaniel Coisty for a bit of peace and quiet.
I’m originally from Eyemouth, so the beach will always feel like home. There’s nothing better than sea air, a long sandy walk, and the obligatory fish and chips afterwards – and the occasional wild dook if I’m feeling brave!
Can you tell us some of your favourite local businesses?
I love supporting local businesses around the Borders and North Northumberland.
Milan in Wooler is definitely a favourite for its cosy atmosphere and amazing food.
Marshalls Café in Berwick is my go-to for a proper breakfast or lunch.
Lough’s Home Bakery in Eyemouth is always worth a visit for a pastry (or two).
I’m also a big fan of independent cafés nearby — good coffee and cake is always a yes from me. Living locally really makes you appreciate the small businesses that give the area its character and charm.
What are you enjoying reading, watching, or listening to at the moment?
Reading is my ultimate switch-off time — and I do love a good fantasy romance. The kind where you promise yourself “just one more chapter”… and suddenly it’s 1am. I’m currently reading the Court of Thorn and Roses series by Sarah J. Maas which I’ve really struggled to put down!
I also really enjoy a thriller or crime series that Connor and I can properly get into — trying to guess the “whodunnit” (I’m rarely right).
If I’m cooking or cleaning — which I find quite therapeutic — I’ll usually have something chilled playing in the background, like Daniel Caesar or Frank Ocean. It just sets the mood and makes even the most ordinary jobs feel a bit more enjoyable.

If you were to describe your dream home what would it look like?
Definitely a newer-build home — I love that fresh, modern feel. Bright, neutral interiors, lots of natural light, and a spacious kitchen with a big island (because cooking is one of my favourite ways to relax).
It would be beautifully styled but still cosy — soft textures, clean lines, and everything in its place. I’m quite house-proud, so it would be organised, welcoming, and somewhere that feels calm the minute you walk through the door.
What are you move looking forward to as we head into the new year?
I’m excited to keep growing within the business and taking on more responsibility — especially when we launch the lettings side. Qualifying was a big step for me, so I’m really looking forward to putting that into action.
Personally, I’m looking forward to continuing to build my life with my partner Connor and my doggy — making memories, new places to walk, a trip away to Egypt (a personal favourite of ours to get away to for some 40° heat!), trying new recipes, and just enjoying this stage of life. It’s busy but so exciting, and 2026 feels like a year to keep progressing — both professionally and personally.
