From major exhibitions and atmospheric light installations to dark sky adventures and winter festivals, February is packed with things to see and do across the local area. We’ve rounded up a selection of upcoming events worth marking in your diary, celebrating the region’s creativity, landscapes and sense of place.
The Northumberland Open Exhibition 2026 – Opens 14 February until 10 May
The annual Northumberland Open at Woodhorn Museum is the largest exhibition of its type in Northumberland and is held at Woodhorn Museum’s Workshop Galleries at Queen Elizabeth II Country Park in Ashington. Showcasing work by artists from across Northumberland and beyond, visitors can also vote for the ‘People’s Choice Award’ which is announced at the end of the exhibition. More Details Here
Litany for the Border – Light up Berwick – 5pm, 7 to 21 February
Choreographed beams of light will shine into the night sky in this light and sound commission by artists Gareth Hudson and Toby Thirling. The light installation is accompanied by a new piece of music by composer Eleanor Cully Boehringer, which will resound across the River Tweed. The project explores the past, present, and future of the people who live along the Tweed, focusing on their ideas of spirituality and what gives their lives meaning. North East Dark Skies Festival- 13 to 21 February
This region-wide festival includes a number of events where visitors can enjoy the dark winter skies, including events at Kielder Observatory, Battlesteads Dark Sky Observatory, Hauxley Wildlife Discovery Centre, and at Hepple Estate, where visitors can share a guided walk around the estate listening for nocturnal animals such as owls, and stargazing atop an iron-age hillfort. Snowdrop festival fairy trail- 14 to 22 February
Welcome the arrival of spring with the snowdrop festival at Wallington near Morpeth. Wander through the East Woods and follow the enchanting fairy trail, discovering fairy doors tucked inside hollow trees and hidden in woodland nooks. Endurancelife Northumberland- 21st February
This competitive trail running event offers a spectacular route along the Northumberland coastline near Beadnell, including beaches, dunes, cliffs, and views of Bamburgh Castle. Earth and Essence Yoga and Wellness Festival – 7th February
Set in the beautiful surroundings of The Alnwick Garden, Earth and Essence showcases the best of wellness and yoga in the North East. You’ll be invited to slow down, recharge and rediscover balance through yoga, meditation, holistic workshops, breathwork, sound healing and nourishing food, along with a number of inspiring talks from guest teachers.
