Fernrig is situated down a quiet single-track road off the A1 roundabout at Cockburnspath. Cockburnspath is a pretty village with an excellent local shop, post office, a nursery and a primary school. The village offers good commuting opportunities throughout the region with the A1 trunk road being on hand providing easy access north and south.
A little further up the A1 is the popular town of Dunbar, an enchanting and vibrant seaside town with excellent local facilities, superb independent retailers, café’s, pubs and restaurants and local Post Office, with larger supermarket facilities just out of town. The John Muir Country Park at West Barns, and the nearby Lammermuir Hills to the South offer scenic, tranquil landscapes, rich in natural history which provide a wealth of walking and riding opportunities, whilst golfers can choose from a number of superb courses with Dunbar Championship Golf Course and a further 15 golf courses all within easy reach. Dunbar is the surfing capital of East Lothian and offers numerous well regarded surfing spot up and down the coast as well as a number of surf schools.
The surrounding villages and hamlets of Cranshaws, Longformacus and Abbey St Bathans offer historic charm, wild woodland walks and breath-taking open views perfect for all sorts of outdoor activities. There are numerous dramatic castles, and historic houses to explore as well as the historic Border Abbey towns of Kelso, Melrose and Jedburgh. Equally impressive is the nearby Berwickshire coastline with various beaches and harbour towns which all link up together via the Berwickshire Coastal path and Coldingham, Eyemouth. Coastal activities include birdwatching and scuba diving at St Abbs and a sheltered sandy beach at Coldingham. From Berwick there is easy access to the North Northumberland Coast and Northumberland National Park. Country and sporting pursuits are widely available and there are several golf courses within a short drive including Eyemouth, Dunbar and Magdalene Fields in Berwick. There are also designated cycling routes throughout the area.
With easy access to the A1 and a direct route to the Edinburgh City by-pass and Airport, travel and commuting is very straightforward. Commuter links to Dunbar are excellent, with the town benefitting from a railway station on the main East Coast line, offering a direct service to Edinburgh’s Waverley Station with a journey time of approximately 20 minutes, and high speed services South to Berwick and London.
