West Coast Exploring

The West Coast of Scotland is known for its stunning landscapes, rugged coastlines, and rich cultural heritage. There are many places to explore, and here are some recommendations we don’t think you should miss:

Isle of Skye: Known for its dramatic landscapes, including the iconic Old Man of Storr and Quiraing. The island offers great hiking opportunities, picturesque villages like Portree, and the historic Dunvegan Castle. Whilst you are there we highly recommend treating yourself to a meal at The Three Chimneys or grab something in a more relaxed setting at The Oyster Shed. As its name suggests it is a shed, but you will not be disappointed by the food, if you are able to find somewhere to park- this place is popular!

Oban: A charming town on the west coast, often referred to as the “Gateway to the Isles.” Visit McCaig’s Tower for panoramic views, explore the Oban Distillery, and take a ferry to nearby islands. We highly recommend venturing just a little further outside of Oban to Seil Island, accessible by the Clachan Bridge, to enjoy lunch at the Tigh an Truish (make sure you book as they aren’t open every day).

Fort William and Ben Nevis: Fort William is a good base for exploring the highest peak in the UK, Ben Nevis. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy hiking, mountain biking, and other adventure activities in the surrounding area. There is also lots of exploring to do in Fort William itself.

Glencoe: Renowned for its dramatic and haunting landscapes, Glencoe is a glacial valley with towering mountains. It’s a paradise for hikers and nature lovers.

Mull and Iona: Take a ferry to the Isle of Mull and visit the colourful town of Tobermory. From Mull, you can also take a boat to the serene Isle of Iona, known for its historic abbey and tranquil atmosphere. There are the most stunning white sandy beaches to be enjoyed here if the weather is onside!

Kintyre Peninsula: Explore the scenic Kintyre Peninsula, with its beautiful coastline and charming villages. Don’t miss the picturesque Machrihanish Beach (a great beach for kids with its wide, clean and sandy) and the historic sites along the way.

Glenfinnan: Famous for the Glenfinnan Viaduct, featured in the Harry Potter films, this area is surrounded by beautiful mountains and is located near the shores of Loch Shiel.

Loch Ness: While Loch Ness is more central than strictly West Coast, it’s not too far and offers the chance to explore the iconic Loch Ness itself and go on a search for Nessie the famous Loch Ness Monster! You can also visit the ruins of Urquhart Castle or take a boat trip on the loch itself.

Argyll Forest Park: This expansive forest park is the oldest in Britain and offers a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, biking, and wildlife watching. Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park is also nearby.

Inveraray: Home to Inveraray Castle and set on the shores of Loch Fyne, Inveraray is a picturesque town with historic architecture and a lovely waterfront.

Whether you’re interested in outdoor activities, history, or simply soaking in the natural beauty, the West Coast of Scotland has something to offer for everyone.
